Client Portfolio Manager

Responsibilities

  • Client Engagement & Investment Representation
    • Act as an investment representative supporting client engagement across institutional, retail, and private wealth channels.
    • Participate in client meetings, including board and investment committee presentations, alongside sales and senior investment team members.
    • Clearly articulate portfolio construction, positioning rationale, performance, and market outlook in a client-appropriate manner.
    • Translate complex investment concepts into clear, concise, and compelling insights for both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • Support relationship development in partnership with the sales team, who retain ownership of client relationships.
  • Investment Communication & Strategy Alignment
    • Maintain an in-depth understanding of portfolio positioning, investment strategies, fund structures, and mandate guidelines across all strategies..
    • Ensure consistency of investment messaging across client segments by aligning closely with Portfolio Managers and Client & Product Solutions.on.
    • Provide forward-looking market perspectives aligned with portfolio strategy.
    • Act as a conduit between investment teams and clients to ensure accurate and consistent communication.
  • Client Deliverables
    • Support the preparation and delivery of client materials including quarterly reviews, presentations, and ad hoc updates.
    • Review and contribute to performance commentary, attribution insights, and client communications.
    • Partner with internal teams (Risk & Analytics, Operations, Compliance) to ensure accuracy and consistency of client deliverables.
  • Business Development Support
    • Support business development initiatives by participating in prospect meetings and client presentations across all channels.
    • Contribute to RFPs, DDQs, and other client-facing materials..
    • Assist in identifying opportunities to deepen relationships and expand mandates within existing clients.
    • Support engagement with institutional consultants, financial advisors, and direct clients as applicable.
  • Thought Leadership & Content Development
    • Develop market commentaries, white papers, and client communications in partnership with Client & Product Solutions and Investment Management..
    • Contribute to the creation of presentation materials and product positioning documents (e.g., monthly/quarterly commentaries, updates, trade spotlights).
    • Represent the firm at client events, conferences, and industry forums as an investment subject matter expert when appropriate.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration
    • Collaborate closely with Portfolio Managers, sales, compliance, and operations teams.
    • Provide client feedback and market insights to investment teams to inform strategy and product development.
    • Maintain a strong understanding of portfolio guidelines and constraints to effectively communicate positioning within client mandates.

Critical Competencies

  • Investment & Technical Expertise – Advanced knowledge of global fixed income markets (cash and derivatives), portfolio construction, fund structures, and quantitative bond analysis. Ability to clearly articulate portfolio strategy and positioning without assuming portfolio risk or discretionary authority.
  • Client Channel Expertise – Strong understanding of institutional, retail, and private wealth client segments, including their objectives, decision-making processes, and portfolio construction needs.
  • Strategic Communication – Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation skills with the ability to translate complex investment concepts into clear, compelling narratives tailored to diverse audiences. Demonstrates credibility and gravitas in client interactions.
  • Accountability & Ownership – Takes initiative, anticipates needs, and delivers with a high degree of professionalism and reliability.
  • Collaboration & Team Orientation – Works effectively across teams, fostering strong relationships with sales, portfolio management, and broader business functions.
  • Operational Excellence & Integrity – Maintains high standards of accuracy, professionalism, and adherence to regulatory and internal policies.

Requirements

  • 10–15+ years of experience in fixed income (Portfolio Manager, trader, or product specialist), with meaningful exposure to institutional clients and consultants.
  • Deep understanding of portfolio construction, fund structures, mandate guidelines, and investment strategy implementation.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting or participating in board and investment committees presentations.
  • CFA or CIM, and other minimum criteria for registration with Canadian securities regulators are required.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management skills.
  • High degree of professionalism, executive presence and sound judgment in client-facing environments.
  • Proficiency with CRM systems (e.g., Salesforce) and strong Excel/PowerPoint skills.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) is considered an asset.
